Hidden Details & Easter Eggs

The jets chasing Iron Man use the call signs Whiplash 1 and Whiplash 2

When Tony flies home from the village rescue, the Air Force sends two F-22s after him, and their radio call signs are Whiplash 1 and Whiplash 2. Jon Favreau confirmed the names were a deliberate nod to the comic book villain Whiplash, and in the same interview he also pointed to Captain America's shield on Tony's workbench as another planted reference. A version of Whiplash went on to be the villain of Iron Man 2.

Captain America's shield is sitting in Tony's workshop

When Pepper walks in on Tony struggling to get out of his armor (the 'not the worst thing you've caught me doing' scene), a partly hidden Captain America shield can be spotted in the background. Captain America would not appear on screen until 2011. More on Steve Rogers →

A cut version of Fury's scene mentioned Hulk, Spider-Man and mutants

Kevin Feige showed an unused take of the post-credits scene at the Saturn Awards in 2019. In it, Nick Fury complains about gamma accidents, radioactive bug bites and assorted mutants, a nod to the Hulk, Spider-Man and the X-Men. At the time, Sony held the film rights to Spider-Man and Fox held the X-Men, and the released scene only says Tony is part of a bigger universe. More on Nick Fury →

Stan Lee's cameo: Tony mistakes him for Hugh Hefner

On the red carpet at a gala, Tony breezes past a grey-haired man in a dressing gown with a pipe and several young women, and greets him as 'Hef'. The man turns around and it is Stan Lee, co-creator of Iron Man. It set the pattern of Lee being mistaken for someone else that Iron Man 2 repeated.

The 'box of scraps' scientist came back 11 years later

The Stark Industries scientist who gets yelled at by Obadiah Stane because Tony built his suit in a cave with a box of scraps is William Ginter Riva, played by Peter Billingsley. Billingsley explained that the middle and last names were nods to crew members. Riva returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) as one of the former Stark employees helping Quentin Beck build Mysterio. More on Obadiah Stane →

A cut Dubai party scene included a Ghostface Killah cameo

Favreau said that a whole party sequence set in Dubai was filmed, placed between Tony's first flight back to Afghanistan and the rest of the story. It was removed because it slowed the film down. The cut footage included a cameo from rapper Ghostface Killah as someone Tony knew.

Shot in the hangar where Howard Hughes built the Spruce Goose

The production was based in Playa Vista, Los Angeles, inside the huge wooden hangar that was turned into a soundstage, where Howard Hughes built his Spruce Goose flying boat. It is a fitting home for a film about a billionaire engineer building his own flying machine.

The 1966 cartoon theme song plays in the film

Alongside Ramin Djawadi's guitar-heavy score, the film uses a big band arrangement of the theme song from the 1966 cartoon The Marvel Super Heroes. The arrangement was made by John O'Brien and Rick Boston, who often work with Favreau.
